Valentine's Day 2009
There are several possibilities of the origin of Valentine's Day. Saint Valentine was a Christian Bishop who lived in ancient Rome. The Roman government did not approve of his religious beliefs; he was jailed for his Christian activities and eventually sentenced to be executed. While in jail he made friends with the jailer's daughter, on February 14th, the day he was due to be executed, he sent a special note of friendship to the girl and he signed it "from your Valentine."
Another interesting story about gift giving for Valentine's may be derived from an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia which took place on February 15th. This was a festival honouring the god Pan, the Roman god of nature, and Juno, the goddess of women and marriage. In the Middle Ages, men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their Valentine would be. They would wear the names on their sleeves, hence the expression "wearing your heart on your sleeve."
Certainly the common thread of Valentines is the art of giving something special to someone you love, today's culture continues the tradition of giving. One billion cards are exchanged for Valentines. It is second only to Christmas in card sales. Approximately 110 million roses, mostly red, will be sold and delivered within a 3 day period; 73% by men and 27% by women.
